Girls’ Beach Volleyball Heads Toward Playoffs
The Girls’ beach volleyball team kicks off their second season with a record of six wins and one loss.
The girls only have three more games before districts. On April 11th, they play Jupiter Christian at home, Cardinal Newman at home on the 18th, and Palm Beach Gardens away on the 19th. District semifinals and finals will both take place at home on the 26th of April. There are matches at 10:00, 12:00, and 4:00. If the girls win the semi-final game, they move on to the finals later the same day.
Captain, Maggie Smith believes this has been one of the most fun years of beach volleyball.
“This season has been a blast. Only being the second year as a sport at Benjamin, we have improved so much. The team is really connected and so are each of the pairs. Going into districts, I feel pretty confident, however, last year we fell short of a district title so each of us is working really hard to win,” said Smith.
Beach volleyball is a relatively new sport at Benjamin arriving with the beach volleyball court donated by Nellie Miller and built for last year’s season. That makes this year only the second beach volleyball season at the Benjamin School.
Beach volleyball seems to be very popular, especially among the court-volleyball players, as the team has six lines, a total of twelve players, three of them seniors. Beach volleyball differs from regular indoor volleyball in many ways, the most obvious being the sand court. However, the games are similar to tennis in that girls play in sets of two people, going up against another set from the opposing team.
Freshman Lila Brodner states that games are enjoyable because “everyone is really nice and experienced”. The experience has certainly paid off, as the team currently has a record of six wins and one loss.
Excitement spikes as spring teams move closer to district games. For beach volleyball, the season officially ends on April 18th, however, the district match is on April 26th. Volleyball players continue to work hard, hoping to make it not only to, but past districts on to states.
