With the routine of a new school year catching on, members of the Freshmen Class are gearing up for upcoming Student Council elections.
Interested representatives of the Class of 2026 were asked to pick up a Student Council election packet. Inside, each potential candidate discovered a trove of information about the election process. To summarize, each would create a resume of their achievements, sign a contract, and answer a few short questions about why they wanted to join the club. Election packets were to be returned by Friday, August 23rd.
The candidates are Isabella Anthon, Teddy Himmich, Ethan Cecil, Julian Koehler, Devin Farmer, Teresa Gorman, Jack Henry Diaz, and Nash Mackenzie.
Farmer feels that Student Council is a great way to get more immersed in the school community and wants to participate in planning important events such as spirit week or Chillin’ and Grillin’.
“I wanted to run for Student Council because it is a step out of my comfort zone. It gives me an opportunity to grow and to better help the school. I also love that I will be able to represent my class and be an aid to any problems that may occur,” Farmer shared.
Like Farmer, Gorman believes that student council is a great way to get involved and is hoping to be a guiding voice in creating fun activities and events for her grade.
“I wanted to run for student council to ensure my class has a voice and to represent the students. If elected, I plan to represent my class in the best way possible and make sure to listen to my
classmates and peers and put their concerns and worries into consideration,” Gorman said.
Each of the eight candidates will have the opportunity to address the class during assembly on Tuesday, August 27th during assembly. Freshman will vote for up to five candidates, and those with the most votes will be elected. The results will be finalized by Friday, August 30th.
Joining the soon-to-be-elected Freshmen Representatives is a new Student Council advisor. With previous advisor, Mrs. Anne Franzen moving to California this past summer, Social Studies teacher Mr. Rubiano took over the Council. One of his first decisions was to ask English teacher Ms. Etheart to serve as an advisor as well.
“I found Mrs. Etheart because we were both hired last year, and coming up together as new teachers we became fast friends. When Mrs. Franzen told me she was leaving, Mrs. Etheart was the first person I thought of to help fill the vacancy. Mrs. Etheart and I had already collaborated last year on some of our classroom content, supporting each other in lesson planning, so it seemed like having her collaborate with me on Student Council would be a logical choice,” Rubiano explained.
Student Council President, senior Vanessa Zito, agrees with Rubiano and feels that Etheart is a fantastic addition as the new advisor, bringing a fresh perspective to the role.
“I think Ms. Etheart is an amazing choice as our new advisor. So far, she’s brought a lot of energy to the role, making it clear that she’s genuinely invested in supporting us… I can already tell she’s going to be a great advocate for us as we navigate this year. I’m really looking forward to working with her,” Zito shared.
Etheart expressed her own enthusiasm about the role, stating, “I’m drawn to the idea of being able to be a part of the joy and excitement of the school. I’m very happy to have the opportunity to work closely with our elected students, who were chosen by their peers to be staunch characters. I also look forward to seeing the students participate in Student Council-planned events, specifically Chillin’ and Grillin.”
