Monday, Feb. 10th, was a quieter day on the Upper School campus. The student body was missing about a quarter of its population due to the annual Senior Skip Day.
This year’s senior skip day was aligned with one of America’s most significant events.
“We decided that senior skip day was best after the Super Bowl because this has followed the precedent of the last five years. No one showed any interest in wanting it moved, and we thought it would be nice to have a super long Super Bowl weekend for our grade,” Student Council President Vanessa Zito stated.
The seniors on the Student Council play a prominent role in the planning of Senior Skip Day. They listen to recommendations given by the senior class and collectively decide on a day they do not want to go to school.
“An overall consensus of the senior class chooses senior skip day. I asked my friends what day it should be on and tried to gain a universal opinion on when everyone wanted it to be,” Zito explained.
Most seniors, such as senior Maddox Hoffman, enjoyed getting extra rest on their day off.
“I was rooting for the Eagles the entire night. I went to bed pretty late, and I was so tired that I slept till one o’clock the next day. I wish I had senior skip day every time after the Super Bowl,” Hoffman noted.
Senior Ford Cash took advantage of the day.
“Over senior skip day, I went to the beach with my group of friends, and then we went back to one of my friend’s houses, had some food, and then went to soccer practice. It was incredible just having a day for the senior grade to relax and take some time off from a stressful first semester,” Cash exclaimed.
Similarly to Cash, senior Riley Weinberger enjoyed the day off.
For senior skip day, I hung out with my friends at the beach and then by the pool. It was nice to have the day off and the weather was so beautiful. It was peculiar not having school when everyone else did. That day, it sunk in that we are graduating in just a couple of months,” Weinberger recalled.
Senior Hutch Gumbinner had a different way of spending his senior skip day.
“I played in a lacrosse game, which was super fun. I didn’t have to go to school, got to sleep in, and beat Dwyer,” Gumbinner said. “I hung out with my friends the entire weekend and not have to stress about school.
Interestingly, most American schools schedule their Senior Skip Day for the school day following prom. Senior Dillon Hoban agrees with the norm.
“I had a ton of fun on senior skip day this year, but pushing it back to the day after prom would have been a lot more fun. We could have created our own long weekend with prom,” Hoban emphasized.
With Senior Skip Day now in the past, seniors are more intently looking the countdown to their high school careers’ end.
