On Saturday, May 10, the boys’ varsity lacrosse team won its second straight state title. It was the third state championship brought back to Benjamin this year. The Bucs defeated the Scots of St. Andrews Scots 14-11.
With the win, the boys finished as the number-one team in the state and the 15th-ranked team in the nation, according to usalacrosse.com. Their season record was an incredible 24-1.
Junior Jake Froot felt amazing after winning a state championship not once, but twice.
“This is something that I will never forget. Winning back-to-back state titles with my best friends is all I could ask for. It means the world to win something so big like this, and hopefully we can come back and three-peat,” Froot said.
Joining Froot, junior Jake Ivancevic was ecstatic over the season he and the team had.
“I can’t even put it into words how special this is. We worked so hard throughout the entire season to only lose one game that we shouldn’t have lost, and I am so proud of everyone on the team,” Ivanceivic stated.
Sophomore Matthew Null saw improvement in the team and himself.
“Many players would stay after practice, shooting or getting extra reps to help improve. Everybody on the team would keep each other in check and not let anybody get complacent or satisfied with previous results,” Null exclaimed.
Similarly to Null, senior Sean Sheehan is so happy with the team.
“I don’t even have words to explain how happy I am. Going back-to-back is unreal, and we worked so hard the entire season to get to this point,” Sheehan stated.
The win over the Bucs’ arch-rivals came at the end of a long and strenuous journey that started well before the first face-off of the season.
Senior Alex Ponchock explained his workload and the players’ workload in the offseason.
“We worked with the football team on sprints and the track team on improving our endurance on the field. Although rough, it all paid out in the end,” Ponchock remarked.
Benjamin also organized a fan bus on Saturday for anyone interested in attending the game. Junior Luc
Borzillieri had a blast.
“I had so much fun at the game. The bus ride was long but fun because I was talking to my friends the entire time,” Borzilleri noted.
This boys’ lacrosse team is probably one of the best sports teams to ever participate in Benjamin Athletics. The Pharcyde congratulates the players and coaches of the lacrosse team on their special accomplishment.
