Blowing out your hair leaves it shiny, bouncy, and full of volume. While curling or straightening are arguably simpler approaches to attaining the perfect hairdo, following these steps will help uncomplicate the blowout.
- Wash your hair
- Shampoo and condition thoroughly, making sure not to leave any residue. I highly recommend the hair wash products from Davines.
- Get your tools
- According to people I’ve gotten advice from, the top-rated, easy-to-use blowout brushes come from Dyson, Drybar, Revlon, and Wavytalk. But you could also use a generic hairdryer and a round brush. The brands above also sell them.
- Dry your hair
- Use either a hairdryer or plain old air, but move on to the next step once your hair is damp.
- Apply a leave-in conditioner
- This will help the style stay in your hair, and sometimes protect it from heat. I highly recommend the leave-in conditioners from Kristen Ess and OUAI.
- Section your hair
- Depending on the thickness of your hair, determine how many sections you need to style. For those with thicker hair, such as sophomore Caroline Yohe, I recommend dividing it into three to four sections. For thinner hair, like Doc Peruggia, two sections might be your limit. Regardless, a good strategy is to start on the lowest section and work your way up.
- Begin to brush with heat
- Working one section at a time, divide and brush. When you reach the end of the strands of hair, flip inwards by rotating the brush downwards, and hold for a few seconds. Repeat three or four times until the end of your hair bounces, then twirl and hold the strand for a few seconds.
- Repeat, repeat, repeat!
- Repeat these same motions until the entire section is done. Push the finished section behind your shoulders before moving on to the next.
